Arabian Oud is the most highly priced perfume on Earth. Raw first-grade Agarwood is one of the most expensive natural raw materials in the world. The superior pure material can fetch prices as high as US$100,000 per kg. Agarwoodis a highly fragrant dark resinous wood used in incense, perfume, and small carvings used for religious rituals. It is formed in the heartwood of the Aquilaria tree as a defensive response to a damage caused by the Ambrosia beetle which feeds on oily/resinous wood. Mould forms inside the core of the tree as a result. Prior to the beetle's interference, the heartwood is odourless, relatively light & pale; however, as the symbiotic infection progresses, the tree produces the highly sought after dark aromatic resinous Agarwood or Oud. The scent is described as oriental-woody, seductive, luxurious and complex, exquisite and very unique. Up to 150 naturally produced components can be found in the Agarwood and there can be variations of the scent.
The resin embedded Agarwood / Oud has been valued in many cultures for its distinctive fragrance for thousands of years and is appreciated as a perfume by men and women alike.
Recently modern-day fashion & perfume designers turn their eye more and more towards this precious fragrance and what was only the privilege of royals can now be enjoyed by many.
